CONTACTS: Cozumel, known as Mexico's Island of Fertility, is one of the most beautiful places on Planet Earth, truly a living Paradise. Despite being the #1 cruise ship port of call (so they say) in the world, it remains quaint, tranquil and unique in its display of Mexican and Mayan cultures, and its people are shy and lovable. In October of 2005, Cozumel was devastated by Hurricane Wilma, yet the island and its reefs have recovered miraculously... by the efforts of both Man and Nature have since then come to represent a triumph of the human spirit. (Sadly, Wilma took the life of our Norfolk pine tree in the front garden seen in older photos). Delightful detailed underwater murals in Casa Concha's kitchen and on Villas Del Caribe entrance wall were painted by Mexico's beloved Artist, Valente', who has not once been under water! Inspired by this master painter's unique 3-D coral relief/acrylic media techniques, in the aftermath of Wilma's destruction, Casa Concha's rock and shell art work was created 100% from hurricane debris washed up in small mountains on the Southeastern side of the island (most piles now reclaimed by the ocean via El Norte winds, waves or changing tides), plus Conch shells and other sea items purchased from Plaza vendors or fishermen, or brought from US art supply stores (packaged shells from Philippines, abalone shells from California). Exterior mosaic/cement creations are decorated primarily with damaged or sample Mexican tiles from local ceramic shops. Welcome to Paradise, where you'll feel the healing, magical powers of our Island Goddess, Ix-Chel (sounds like ISHea-Shell)!! |
